Quick, easy and cost-effective changes any business can make to make its site more effective
Making your website more effective is about asking questions: Of your website and the people who come to it.
These questions may not be easy to answer – but the answers to these questions will give you the information you need to take your website where it needs to go in order to work harder for your business.
Try and think like your ideal visitor.
Put yourself in the mind of an ideal visitor, and ask:
Am I in the right place?
Is this website going to solve the problem I have?
Why would I do business with this company instead of company X?
Can I do what I want to do on this site – find the information I need, carry out the action I want, buy the item I desire?
Unless you are a web designer yourself, the things you are likely to be able to change on your website (if it has a content management system) are the copy, the imagery and structure.
The website text:
Does it speak to your target visitor in their language?
Are you using too many jargon terms?
Does it tell the visitor what you do and what problem you solve?
Graphics and images:
If you‘re on a budget, you can refresh your images at a low-cost, good stock photography websites such as .
Website structure and organisation:
Is your most profitable and popular product hidden away on an obscure product page...
Could you make a link to it from the home page?
Do you need all those fields on your contact form?
Would more people fill in that form if it asked for less information?
It is also very important that you have some kind of web statistics software so you can measure how effective your changes have been – do they increase the number of pages viewed, the time people spend on the site, the number of contact forms filled in, the amount of money they spend...?
Sometimes the simplest change can work wonders.
In 2004, a US Presidential nominee‘s website moved the ’Donate Now“ button from the bottom of the page to the top of the page, which resulted in average donations increasing from $3 per visitor to $45!
